At the forefront of the Sexual Revolution, Masters and Johnson are about to publish their study, finally removing the shroud from the work that’s consumed them for the past decade. As they face the press for the first time, they flashback to a summer vacation of the year prior, where Virginia is faced with parenting struggles, Bill is finishing work on their book, and Libby is pulling herself out from beneath a deep depression.
Masters of Sex premieres Sunday July 12, 10pm, on Showtime.
Back in March Lizzy recorded the Variety Emmy Studio: Actors on Actors with fellow actress Allison Janney. They talked about doing comedy on drama, among other things.
“(Virginia Johnson) passed away after we shot the pilot. But she made it very clear that she didn’t want any involvement in it whatsoever … I don’t think she read the script, it was more that she wrote this book, and that was her story, and then she wanted to just live out the rest of her life away from it all. Which I had to respect, but it drove me a bit crazy. And I’m also not tasked with doing a direct impersonation, because people don’t know what she sounds like or how she moved or anything. Which is good, because I don’t know if I would be any good at that.”
In THR’s roundtable, six Emmy contenders – Jessica Lange, 66 (American Horror Story: Freak Show), Lizzy Caplan, 32 (Masters of Sex); Viola Davis, 49 (How to Get Away With Murder); Ruth Wilson, 33 (The Affair); Taraji P. Henson, 44 (Empire); and Maggie Gyllenhaal, 37 (The Honorable Woman) — speak candidly about the current climate in a conversation about nudity and typecasting. This can be found on current The Hollywood Reporter issue, which cover is already added in our gallery.
During a visit to Variety’s Emmy studio, TV’s top contenders offered a glimpse inside their creative process. Lizzy was, once again, included:
Lizzy Caplan “Masters of Sex”
“The most difficult scene (for me) was when Julianne Nicholson’s character passes away. She dies of cancer, which brought back a lot of stuff from my own childhood in a way I hadn’t experienced before. And that’s one of the greatest and most challenging things about being an actress — you relive past trauma.”
In a newly released teaser trailer, Josh Charles can be seen as charismatic salesman Daniel Logan, a self-made businessman working in the scent industry. He crosses paths with famed sex researchers Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson (Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan) in his attempt to bottle the smell of sex and market the aphrodisiac to the public. His involvement with the already-intimate pair becomes, well, complicated.
The Showtime period drama also unveiled its key art for the upcoming third season, which is intended to mark the drama’s entrance into a new era — the ’60s. The image shows the leading duo tangled up with Master’s wife, Libby (Caitlin Fitzgerald), on a colorful Twister mat. The game, which gained popularity in May of 1966 when it was televised on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, also endured criticism for supposedly selling “sex in a box.”
Coincidentally, the series will return in 1996, a five-year time jump from where season 2 left off. It will follow Master and Johnson’s journey into the public eye as they publish their study at the onset of the sexual revolution. Meanwhile, a three-way relationship appears to evolve between Bill, Virginia and Libby.
The third season of Masters will premiere on Sunday, July 12th at 10:00 p.m. on Showtime. Get a sneak peak of what’s to come:
Variety has published today an exclusive clip from the one of the opening scenes from the upcoming season of “Masters of Sex”, which will premiere next July 12.
The third season of the Showtime drama, which stars Michael Sheen and Caplan as sex researchers Masters and Johnson, is set in 1965 — just as sexual liberation is heating up. Coincidentally, it’s also the year before the duo published their groundbreaking research text, “Human Sexual Response.” But, as the clip suggests, Masters and Johnson had a rough road ahead before their book was to be taken seriously — even if they might have patched up their personal relationship since last season’s finale.
Lizzy and her Masters of Sex co-stars attended last night a Showtime and Sony Pictures’s ‘Masters Of Sex’ screening at Cary Grant Theater in Culver City, California. She was looking beautiful in a colorful floor-length Mary Katrantzou paisley dress, as you can see in the pictures below:
Masters of Sex season three will premiere on July 12.
Lizzy Caplan keeps it chic and classy at the 2015 Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday (May 4) in New York City. She looked gorgeous in a Donna Karan Atelier one shoulder dress, and you can find several HQ images added in our gallery.
